Do you have a filling that feels a little loose? Give Dr. James Shepler and Dr. Jamie Shepler of North Main Dental in Dayton, OH, a call. The dentists offer treatments that will help you protect your smile.

How fillings loosen

Fillings are designed to withstand years of chewing and biting but can become loose in some cases. You may be more likely to notice a loose filling if:

  • A new cavity develops around the filling
  • You use your teeth to open objects or eat hard foods, like nuts and hard pretzels
  • You've had the filling for a long time
  • You grind your teeth while you sleep

You may be able to feel that your filling is loose or move it back and forth with your tongue. Other signs aren't so obvious. Your filling may be loose if your tooth hurts when you eat, or you notice pain after you eat or drink anything sweet, hot, or cold.

What to do if your filling is loose

You'll need to visit your dentists in Dayton, OH, if you have a loose filling. Until it's time for your appointment, follow these recommendations:

  • Don't chew with the tooth
  • Swish warm salt water in your mouth to decrease pain
  • Add temporary filling repair material, available at drugstores, to your tooth if you've lost the filling completely
  • Use an ice pack or over-the-counter numbing gel to manage pain
  • Don't eat or drink hot, cold, or sugary beverages and foods

Treatments for loose fillings

You'll need a new filling if your current restoration is loose, lost, or damaged. If a new cavity is formed around the old filling, it may not always be possible to simply add a new filling.

An inlay, onlay, or dental crown may be needed instead. Inlays and onlays are restorations made in dental laboratories. Inlays fit inside the cusps, the pointed bumps on your teeth. Outlays extend beyond the cusps. If the area to be filled is large, your dentist may recommend a crown. Crowns fit over the tops of teeth, covering them completely.
