Your gums can reveal more about the state of your health than you might think.

How often do you think about your gums? Probably rarely, if ever, right? If you’re shaking your head it may be time to consider what you’re doing to maintain good periodontal health. After all, your gums play a major role in your oral and general health. From the office of our Dayton, OH, dentist Drs. James & Jamie Shepler, here’s why maintaining healthy gums is so important,

They support your teeth

So you’re brushing your teeth twice a day and you think your smile looks amazing; however, your teeth are only as healthy as your gums. After all, it’s your gums that support your teeth. More than half of the American adult population has some degree of gum disease, which damages the gums and prevents them from being able to support your teeth. As a result, this leads to loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. That’s why keeping your gums healthy is a boon for the rest of your smile.

Possibly reduce your risk for heart disease

The gums are a window into your general health as much as your oral health. People with gum disease are 2-3 times more at risk for having a heart attack, stroke or serious cardiac event. While the link between these two diseases is still not fully understood, it’s best to play it safe and focus on ways to maintain healthy gums.

How can I promote healthier gums?

If you’ve never really thought about your gum health before it’s time you started. After all, anyone is at risk for developing gum disease. Here are some ways to keep gums healthy,

  • Floss at least once a day (preferably before brushing)
  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Eat a healthy, nutrient-dense diet rich in vegetables
  • Chew sugar-free gums
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash throughout the day
  • Visit your Dayton, OH, family dentist twice a year for checkups

When was the last time you visited the dentist? If it’s been more than six months then it’s time to call North Main Dental at (937) 275-0076 to schedule an appointment with our Dayton, OH, dental team.
