Do you dislike some aspect of your smile? Cosmetic dentistry procedures can correct many flaws that prevent you from loving your cosmetic dentistrysmile. Dr. James Shepler and Dr. James Shepler, III, of North Main Dental Inc. in Dayton, OH, share information about a few procedures you may want to consider.

Cosmetic bonding

Bonding may be one of the simplest ways to repair a damaged tooth or improve its appearance, but it's also one of the most effective. Composite resin, a plastic-based material, is applied to your tooth to repair chips, close gaps, cover surface imperfections, hide discolorations or even slightly lengthen teeth during your visit to our Dayton office. When the bonded area is exposed to a curing light, it hardens in seconds and is indistinguishable from your tooth enamel.

Crowns and bridges

Crowns, shells that fit over teeth, are recommended if you have a weak tooth or happened to break a tooth. They're also a good choice if your tooth has become too short due to grinding or if you want to hide a crooked or discolored tooth. Bridges are made up of both crowns and artificial teeth. The artificial teeth are suspended between the crowns to create a bridge that replaces missing teeth.

Veneers

Veneers are just about as thick as a fingernail but offer exceptional coverage for minor imperfections. They're available in a variety of shades, are very durable and resist stains. The tooth-shaped shells are cemented to the fronts of your teeth and are often used to cover cracks, chips, discolorations and gaps. Some people also use veneers to whiten their teeth.

Invisalign

Invisalign allows you to straighten your teeth without calling attention to yourself. If wearing a mouthful of metal has kept you from improving your smile, you'll want to consider this brace option. Clear removable aligner trays, instead of wires and brackets, reposition your teeth. Trays are replaced every two weeks, which allows for gradual changes in your smile. The trays are removed when you eat and brush your teeth and can also be taken out for special occasions.
